Denver – The Colorado Trial Lawyers Association (CTLA), Colorado’s largest specialty bar association, awarded Towards Justice with its annual Consumer Protection Award last week, recognizing the organization’s important advocacy helping people and communities fight abuses of corporate power.
Our clients and the communities that we serve don’t care if we think about their legal problems as consumer problems, workplace problems, or landlord-tenant problems. And increasingly, the lines between those artificial legal silos have blurred. While we typically focus on workplace abuses, we have also led the fight for economic equity and consumer protection in Colorado and around the country.
Towards Justice is litigating cases nationwide on behalf of workers challenging abuses in employer-driven debt, a predatory practice that sits at the intersection of consumer and workplace abuse – this includes litigation on behalf of PetsMart groomers, pilots, and software bootcamp grads.
Towards Justice has also been at the forefront of federal advocacy on predatory employer-driven debt, including testifying before the U.S. Senate Banking Committee last year. The organization has also spearheaded efforts at the state level to modernize Colorado’s consumer protection laws to help consumers hold corporations accountable for unfair and deceptive practices.
Towards Justice’s Executive Director, David Seligman, who accepted the award on behalf of the organization, said, “We are so grateful to be honored by the Colorado Trial Lawyers Association for our efforts helping people and communities to challenge abuses of corporate power. Our clients confront bullies in far too many places in this state – in the workplace, the consumer marketplace, and in the fineprint of the contracts they’re forced to sign. We are so proud to stand shoulder to shoulder with CTLA in confronting these abuses and honored to receive this award.”
A leader in the fight for economic equity, Towards Justice is a nonprofit law firm that uses impact litigation, policy advocacy, and collaboration with workers and workers’ organizations to build worker power and advance economic equity.
