Press Release: Trump Illegally Fires FTC Commissioner Alvaro Bedoya One Day Before Colorado Testimony

Denver, CO: Earlier today, Colorado’s General Assembly announced that FTC Commissioner Alvaro Bedoya and former CFPB General Counsel Seth Frotman would testify before a joint session of the House and Senate Judiciary Committees on the role of states in protecting affordability, as the federal government rolls back critical protections for working people.

Just hours later, Donald Trump and Elon Musk illegally fired Commissioner Bedoya—an appointee serving a fixed, seven-year term under federal law—in a brazen attempt to dismantle the Federal Trade Commission and gut its ability to hold corporate monopolies accountable. This is the latest assault on the agencies protecting working people against corporate abuse, from the FTC to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau to the National Labor Relations Board.

Over the past few years, the FTC has taken on monopoly power, junk fees, non-compete agreements, and more—fights that threaten the billionaire class and their stranglehold over the economy. That’s why Trump and Musk are trying to destroy it.

“Trump’s and Musk’s firing of FTC Commissioners Bedoya and Slaughter blatantly violates the law. They remain FTC commissioners no matter what the richest man on the planet says. This is an affront to the rule of law, but not just the rule of law as some abstract principle, it’s an affront to the rule of to steal from us and line their own pockets.

The fight for working people will continue, especially right here at the state level in Colorado. From bullying our immigrant neighbors to dismantling our critical federal agencies, Trump and Musk pursue their cruel and lawless agenda with one goal in mind: growing their own profits and power at our expense. We won’t back down,” said David Seligman, Executive Director of Towards Justice.

FTC Commissioner Alvaro Bedoya and Former CFPB General Counsel Seth Frotman will testify before a Joint Session of the Colorado Judiciary Committees at 1:30 P.M. in Denver. [Audio livestream available here; Video livestream to be shared tomorrow]
